Hiya,

host: xubuntu
guest: xp

I've tried to install guest addons and all that achieves is 4bit mode

all im after is to have 1024x576 resolution so I can run it in fullscreen mode

tried installing drivers, changing it through regedit and none have worked...

help!

A little more information if you please.

What version of VBox are you using, plus the settings you used for the VM, and the host memory?
Also you say you tried to install the guest additions. Did they fail to install or just not change anything?

VirtualBox: 2.2.2

64 video
512 ram

host video 64
host memory 1024

Installing the guest additions just made XP run in 4bit mode, looked like safemode.

Try setting the guest video memory to 16 meg but no more than 32 meg.
Boot the machine and reinstall the guest additions.
See how this works. Then you should be able to increase the window by dragging the edge with you mouse or using the host keys (look in the machine tab at the top left of the window).

Genius!!

I switched to 16bit graphics before installing... it worked a treat!
