VM stops responding after pressing a key

Hi All,
I'm using VirtualBox version 2.2.2 r46594 on Debian lenny. I'm trying to open VHD images that I've received from my instructor on MCSE course. I've created new VM for Win 2k3 and attached VHD imaged successfully. VM is starting, I'm getting as far as "Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del to log in" screen. Mouse seams to work fine as the pointer is moving, however the VM is not reacting on any key strokes. Doesn't matter which key (or combination) I press - it's not reacting at all, event worse - mouse pointer stops moving. Thought that the VM is hanging - but when I left the VM running for a while Screen Saver pops up - so I reckon that the machine is still working fine only the HID stopped working.
The only solution to get mouse pointer (which is still useless as I can not log in to the system) back is to restart the VM.

Does anyone have any solution or hints on how to solve this issue ?

Press the host key + delete instead of Ctrl + Alt + Del.
host key is usually the right ctrl key.

After you have started your guest.
In the "Machine" menu you have "send ctrl-alt-delete"

I've already tried that - ctrl+del and "send ctrl+alt+del" from the menu - but it gave me same result - no response at all + no more mouse movements.
VM is also not reacting for "send acpi shutdown" when I'm trying to shut it down. :(

Try disabling 3-d acceleration if that is on.

Thanks for your previous hints - unfortunately - I've tried disabling 3d (and all other settings bar ACPI) already - still with no luck :(
