Running XP on Ubuntu 9.04

Post by vboxuser31 »

I have run into a few problems when trying to run my XP partition on my Ubuntu 9.04 partition. Both of my Operating Systems are fully updated, and I want to know how to run Windows XP in Ubuntu 9.04 using VirtualBox. I am unsure of my version of VirtualBox, but I downloaded it from the Synaptic Package Manager so I presume that my version is up to date. The main problem I am having is getting XP to boot from my Hard Drive. I have looked at many tutorials and they all say that you must insert a CD of SP3 of XP, but I already have XP installed on my Hard Drive. If anyone knows how I could get VirtualBox in Ubuntu 9.04 to run my Windows XP Partition it would be very helpful! Just to make sure everyone knows the problem, I am trying to use VirtualBox in Ubuntu 9.04 to run my EXISTING PARTITION of Windows XP! Thanks again!

Ever used a search engine? It's really helpful and useful. Or even browsed the forum before asking questions? There's a nice howto at the top of the Windows Guests forum.
Read the Forum Posting Guide before opening a topic.
VirtualBox FAQ: Check this before asking questions.
Online User Manual: A must read if you want to know what we're talking about.
Howto: Install Linux Guest Additions
Howto: Use Shared Folders on Linux Guest
See the Tutorials and FAQ section at the top of the Forum for more guides.
Try searching the forums first with Google and add the site filter for this forum.
E.g. install guest additions site:forums.virtualbox.org

Thanks for the heads up, I tried looking around the forum before I posted but some of the things I did not understand, considering I'm only in grade 10. If anyone here could possible reply with a "Tutorial" either video, with pictures, or just plain old step by step how-to, I would really appreciate it! Thanks Again!

Yes that would be nice, but that is outside the scope of this forum. When using VBox we all expect you to have some basic knowledge which includes knowing the difference between the running OS and its storage media, the manual and several FAQ's here should be more then enough to get you going. If after following whats already out there you get stuck, then you open a topic describing what you have done and whats not working. We are NOT going to hold you by your hand into the toilet, using VBox equals being able to go on your own.

What about reading all of the replies you get?

Yes I looked at that, but again I'm only in Grade 10 and I don't fully understand what the HowTo is talking about, it brought me back to the original Post in the top of this Forum Board, HOWTO: manage VDIs and import native installations, but I don't understand what its saying....

Then you need to google, read and learn, we can't help you with what you don't know yet.

For example, here is your weekend homework:

Maybe you're just not smart enough yet (long way to learn) to use the tools noted in the Howto. If something is outside your current level of knowledge, it's best not to do it at the moment, but learn about it in a steady pace.
How well do you know your way around Linux? If it's not on an intermediate level, don't even attempt this. Get yourself familiar with the OS first.
