Is there a way of change the host key?
I just installed virtualbox and it worked without problem. The only thing is the the standard host key is the right ctrl key. My laptop is one of those that does not have a right ctrl key, only on left side.

is there a way to change this key or some other shortcut to switch out of the guest OS?

Sure is.
In the VBox GUI on the top left click file and then preferences. Select the input and change the key. You must click the box that has the ctrl listed and then hit another key to change it.
