Virtualization in computer without AMD-V/INTEL-VT

im very confused about how Vbox works in computer without VT TECH. For example, VWMARE use Binary Translation to works in computer without VT TECH. It was the first way to made virtualization posible, but Vbox how doest it work? i dont know.
Actually i tried to install vbox 2.2.2 in computer without VT TECH and the performance is very bad. I know that VBOX enable by default AMD-V/INTEL-VT and you can disable editing the xml file on the machine. However that isnt the solution to get a good performance.
If you enalbe 3d aceleration in the virtual machine in CPU without VT TECH, the v-machine doesnt works decently. You must disalbe that.
aparantely, VBOX 2.2.2 works well in the HOST but that's not the point i want to virtualize LINUX (ubuntu 9.04 or ubuntu 8.10) and get a desent performance. Actually i cant with the 2.2.2.
May be you can help me to understand this.
see you
