USB Devices

Hi there

I am running Virtualbox 2.1.4_OSE on Ubuntu 9.04 and was hoping to use it to allow me to move completely to linux. I have a Canon LIDE100 Scanner that is less than a month old...but unfortunately there are no drivers available for it under linux yet. Is it possible to pass the USB port through to the guest OS so that the guest OS (in this case XP) would be able to see it and allow me to run it's drivers?

Many thanks

Yes it would as long as the guest is running, can see the USB port and you have set the host to use network printing mapped to the guest. Other variables to consider are static addresses and printer sharing on the guest

I am sorry, but I am not sure I understand - Would enabling network printing allow the guest to access the USB port where the scanner is connected?

Sorry I did not make myself clear.
The OSE version of VBox does not support USB you would need to get the PUEL version.
Then you can run the scanner on the guest.
And if this is a multi function device (print, scan ..) you would be able to do as I say above.

Hi again

I have gotten the PUEL version (2.2.2 r46594 - from this site) running now and enabled USB for the guest. I have confirmed that my user is in the vboxusers group and selected the filter for my scanner that vbox presented me with. XP sees that there are now USB ports available to it, but doesn't see any device attached.

When I try and select the device via the USB icon or through the devices menu, all of the USB devices are listed but are greyed out.

I am at a loss, would anyone have any suggestions? It feels like I am so very close now.

Many thanks

***EDIT***

Feel free to either ignore me or mock me. I was convinced that I was in the vboxusers group. When I checked on the command line though, apparently not. Added via the command line (instead of the gui), logged out and back in - Hey presto...working Canon scanner....

Now I can begin the process of moving away from dual boot.

Cheers
