Vista Guest w/ Host Ubuntu 9.04 (ose 2.1.4)? SOLVED!

I trashed Vista and installed Ubuntu 9.04. Then I installed ose 2.1.4.

Now I am trying to install Vista as a guest OS using the Vista Recovery Disk(s). The guest OS machine starts reading disk #1, says it's loading Windows but after after 30 seconds the screen goes blank (guest) and nothing else happens.

Is it possible to install a guest OS from the Recovery Disks?

It depends how the recovery disks work, mostly they read from a hidden partition which is not there inside a VM.

Installing the OEM version that was supplied with your hardware on other hardware (a VM is that too) is a violation of the License Agreement. We can't, and won't help you with this.

I am trying to install the same OEM version on its original hardware. I have deleted the OEM version from the laptop and now I am trying to install it as a guest OS instead of as a host (host now being Ubuntu). It is the same hardware and same OS and there is only one copy that will be installed. The License Agreement should allow me to re-install the single copy of Vista. But thanks for your "won't help" reply.

I would be using the OEM version (single copy) on the same computer it came on it except as a guest instead of as the host. The host OS is now Ubuntu. Using Vista is not that important to me and this was more of an experiment than a need. Since I already paid for Vista (included with the purchase of laptop) I thought it would be nice to have a copy to use and I was curious about the VirtualBox. I can get by without Vista so I'll just forget about it. Thanks.

You don't have a license for the VM hardware, only the bare metal hardware on which you installed Ubuntu. VB emulates hardware, so you and I have the exactly the same hardware (except for CPU) in the OS point of view when run in a VM, while the Host has entirely different hardware. A VM is a simulated/emulated computer, inside your own computer. It's all described in the Wikipedia article that is linked in the VirtualBox FAQ.

So, if you need Vista, buy a new license for the VM, or restore it again on your machine and dual boot between Vista and Linux.
