[Debian Lenny]Wrong font rendering and unable to mount image

Post by Mafkeesdejong »

Hi,

I'm using Virtualbox for quite some time now, and I really enjoy using it. There are only two things which make Virtualbox a less enjoyable application.
#1 Fonts are messed up in consoles (Windows console and Linux terminals) and input menus such as in Windows login windows. They are simply not readable, sometimes even gone, and then suddenly they pop up again.
#2 I can mount images in Debian via Virtualbox (without GDM, totally in terminal mode) but I can't find them. I want to install the Virtualbox Additions but I simply can't find the drive in /media/cdrom. While in a GDM (GUI) mode I can

Specs:
Debian Lenny 2.6.26-2-amd64
Virtualbox 2.2.2

I would like to hear some feedback, thanks in advance :)

The font problem may be because you do not have the guest additions loaded. My Lenny (Gnome) works fine. KDE may be an issue but that can be because of the composite they use.
  • You first must mount the drive to be able to see and use it.
  • The easiest way is to click on the device tab at the top left of the VBox window and then click on install Guest Additions.
  • This will put the CD on the desktop. Double click to open it.
  • Open a terminal window and type su then press enter.
  • Type the super secret password that you gave Lenny when you installed it and press enter again.
  • This is where it really gets neat! Drag the VBoxLinuxAdditions-amd64.run file and drop it in the terminal.
  • Note: (you may need to put sh at the beginning of the command)
  • Click once on the terminal window and hit enter. Sit back and watch for any errors that you get.
If you do not get any errors reboot and then you will be able to see better and can drag the window to any size you want.

I've installed the guest additions, here is a video of the 'bug'. I suggest you watch it in HD quality

I'll test the image solution later this day, thanks!

I've tested that, and now the console input is visible again, but I don't think of it as a solid solution. But it will do for the time being, thanks! :D

Is this 'bug' already been reported and will it be fixed in the near future?

You know why? Because of the Desktop Manager. That has a trigger to auto mount and run any autorun scripts found on the CD. A CLI doesn't have that. That's why I made a howto, so you mount the CD MANUALLY. If you don't like that behaviour, get yourself a GUI or use Windows, as the CLI is not meant for you. Check my howto in the Linux Guests forum.

I work with non-virtual servers without a GUI, no problems. But in Virtualbox there is no way of mounting them because my virtual machine doesn't see them. So if you want to give me tutorials then just give them, don't wait for me to ask for them, otherwise don't mention them...

I said, check the howto in the Linux Guests forum, it's at the top. You just have to use the mount command. mount /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom. That's all. Execute with super user privileges.
