Ubuntu 9.04/Vbox 2.2.2/XPSP3 - mostly fine

I have finally made the move from XP to Ubuntu and want to use XPSP3 in VirtualBox for those "essential" apps until I can wean myself off them and/or find native apps which I'm happy with.
It's a freshly installed Ubuntu 9.04 and a freshly installed XPSP3. Most things are just fine, and impressively fast, but there are a couple of niggles.
Firstly, shared folders. I have two data partitions on the host (different drives) set up as shared folders and mapped to drive letters on the guest. All files/directories are owned by the current logged-in host user and are 755 so I should have full access. However I am unable to delete files from the guest - I get "D:\ is not accessible. The request not supported". Also if I right-click, it takes a good 10 seconds for the context menu to come up. Strangely I can create files and folders and rename them - just not delete. I can delete from the host just fine so it seems not to be permissions.
Sometimes I lose the ability to *read* files on a shared folder. I have some MPEG-TS files from a DVB-T recorder which I want to top-and-tail with VideoRedo (one of those essential apps) and everything works for a while then without warning the app can no longer seek in the current file nor open any others.
Secondly, if I try to rip a DVD using DVDDecrypter in the guest, it hangs. I haven't yet found a linux app which can rip the whole of the main title to a single VOB yet, so this is a problem.
I must stress that these are niggles, in general it works remarkably well.
