Video driver issue Windows Vista x64

The virtualbox graphics adapter (v 2.2.2) keeps reverting to low color (256) mode.
After I remove the adapter from device manager, and add it again, the problem is resolved.
However, now and then the problem keeps arising.
So now I disabled the Virtualbox graphics adapter entirely.
Strangely, this solves the problem!I can choose any color depth and resolution I like.
So this could be an advise to people who experience the same issue.
