Deleting VMWare Tools

Post by Infran »

*New problem. Check the fourth post.*

I'm running VB 2.2.2 on Ubuntu Jaunty. The host is Windows XP SP2.

The title of this thread gives a brief summary. I checked to be sure the networking was set to NAT. I don't know how to delete the WMVare Tools, though. Is there a way to do it without activating the guest?

Open the VM in VMware, then you can remove the tools. These tools prevents the Guest from accessing internet in VB, because the VMWare tools mess up the driver big time to suite it's own needs for VMW.

Whoops. Typo. ^_^;

The only error is something along the lines of 'Windows was unable to access the internet. Would you like to activate over the phone?'

Okay, I've been trying a few things and… well, something else seems to have come up for me.

I tried importing a machine into VMWare without installing the VMWare tools. When I did this, the mouse and keyboard would be unresponsive in the guest, even when captured. Going back and forth, it seems the mouse and keyboard would work if the VMWare tools are installed.

So, I'm starting to think that something is install with, or part of, the VMWare Tools that allows me to use the mouse and keyboard. Hopefully, removing the VMWare Tools won't also remove whatever it needs in order for me to have input.

EDIT: Okay, how exactly do you delete the VMWare Tools? I've tried just deleting the folder, but it tells me this:
Cannot delete sigc-2.0.dll: Access is denied.

Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.
Yes, I'm logged in as the admin. In fact, it's the only account on my VM right now.

If it's not too much trouble, I would install XP again in a new VM. You're wasting too much time with this. So unless you have very important data and settings on it, it would be easier to just start with a fresh install. You have to activate XP anyway.

In a new VB VM?

There's a problem with that. You see, my Windows install disc came with and built into my Virtual PC 7 for Mac install discs, and I don't think it'll work with anything else. I tried importing the Virtual PC file, but that always gave me an error (see here), which confuses me because I heard VPC media was supported by VB. VMWare Fusion does import properly, so I've been trying to use it as a bridge.

I want to move to something faster and more compatible than VPC, and I like to get it working on my Linux machine. Though you're right about the trouble it's being. At the moment, it seems like it might be easier to see if I can get VMWare Player working.

Ok, now we can get you some real help.

So, the VPC doesn't work properly in VB, but you managed to get it working in VMWare. Great. So, it works in VMW. Don't install any additions or tools or whatever, as that will only mess up things.
Now that you have it working as a VMW image, you can transfer it to VB. All that you need to check if all hardware is working properly in the VM. You might want to change the default NIC type from PCNet to an Intel one, and download the driver from the intel site and transfer it to the VM using Shared Folders or USB. XP should have the driver for the PCNet adapters and the Intel/PRO1000T Server. Only the MT Desktop is not build in. But as you have a 'pre-build' installer for VPC, it might have some specific drivers and nothing else.

I hope I made sense. Good luck.
