Cannot install FreeDOS from CD - invalid partition table

I got a VM created that opens up a CD image for installation of FreeDOS. The FreeDOS install always fails with "Failure reading partition table". Any ideas?
Are the OS Type settings supposed to make any difference? As the operating systems are not included, I don't know what these settings could possibly do.

The solution for me was to load the VM from a bootable FreeDOS floppy image and then run fdisk to create the virtual disk partition. The CD installer then worked as usual.

I just booted FreeDos from the CD-image to get into FreeDos.
At the prompt, "X:\", type FDISK [ENTER] to start the partition application.
create a logical partition (option 1) on the virtual C: drive.
After exit from FDISK, reboot the FreeDos VM.
Now you should be able to install on the C: drive.
(The installation program will format the C drive for you before the file coying starts.)
