installing Windows 7 RC 64bit on Ubuntu 9.04

Post by pwithey2 »

I've a 64bit system (Asus A8v de luxe with AMD Athlon64 bit 3800+) running Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04. 64bit

downloaded and installed Virtualbox -2.2.2.2.2.-46594 ubuntu jaunty amd64.deb successfully.

Set up a new virtual machine using the wizard to install the Windows 7 RC 64bit from an .iso
The windows install starts OK but bombs out with the following error:

Windows Boot manager: File \windows\system32\boot\winload.exe
Status: 0xc000035A
info: Attempting to load a 64bit application, however this CPU is not compatible with 64bit mode. ??? (my question marks)

The CPU is running 64bit version of Ubuntu atm and has run various versions of windows including an earlier Windows 7 64 bit
release as straight installs (without Ubuntu).

If I follow the same procedure but use the Windows 7 RC 32 bit .iso it installs in the virtual machine correctly.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Any suggestions appreciated. Pete

Make sure that the bios VT-x/AMD-v is turned on and also that you have VT-x/AMD-v turned on in the VBox settings.
Also I hear that the IO-APIC needs to be on for some people to get Win7RC to load.

Many thanks for the swift response.

In the Vbox setting "VT-x/AMD-v" is "on". IO-APIC was "off" but turning it "on" has no effect.

When you say "make sure the bios VT-x/AMD-v is "on". Where do I find this? Is it in the initial
bios settings - the Amibios setting that I enter by pressing "delete" on startup? If it is I can't find
it there.

It's probably me being a bit thick but any further help would be appreciated.

Pete.

If you do not see the setting for it in the bios then that is why Win7 64 bit will not install. You may just need to update your bios but it also may not support hardware virtualization. You will need to contact your hardware manufacture to find out or to obtain a fix if available.

Thanks again.

Just checked and the system bios does need updating. I'll see to it tomorrow. Hopefully that will be
the answer. If not I'll try Asus support.

I tried updating the bios - no change to the problem.

I can't find it on the Asus website but the article on Wikipedia at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86_virtualization.
under the heading: AMD Virtualization (AMD -v) suggests that the problem lies with my version (socket 939) of the
Athlon 64 processor to provide the support it needs to be the Socket AM2+ version.

It's not a great problem as it is a spare box I use for experimenting.

Thanks for the help, it pushed me in the right direction. Pete.

I've tried the same (Windows 7 RC 64bit on Ubuntu 9.04) with an Intel Dual T3400 and got the same error. Ubuntu works fine in 64bit mode. I'll maybe give the Win7 32bit version a try, tomorrow.
