HowTo 64-bit guests?

I *thought* it was solved, but doesn't seem to work here.
I have ubuntu 64-bit host:
2.6.28-11-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 01:58:03 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux
virtualbox-2.2 2.2.2-46594_Ubuntu_jaunty Sun VirtualBox, with
kubuntu-9.04-desktop-amd64.iso as guest.
I have tried a few things, but it tells me one way or another that my system is i686
"VT-x/AMD-V hardware acceleration has been enabled, but is not operational. Your 64-bit guest will fail to detect a 64-bit CPU and will not be able to boot.
Please ensure that you have enabled VT-x/AMD-V properly in the BIOS of your host computer."
It is enabled in the BIOS, and I *think* the Dual-core BE-2300 supports it. Even if not, the 'help' says VirtualBox supports 64-bit guests on 32-bit hosts, and the BE-2300 surely is 64-bit.
I have followed the 'Help' and tried activating the IO/APIC, to no avail.

64 bit guests are only supported when vt-x/amd-v is active, have a look for a newer bios.

Since it *is* the most recent one, I guess I'm screwed.
Strange still, that it shows the virtualization as option, and it is 'Enabled'.

Vt-x is often more then 1 single toggle in the bios, sometimes its called differently, or you need to switch it off to get it on, best is to get the exact motherboard type and bios version numbers and google around for that, or email the manufacturer what exactly needs to be flipped.

Also, enable PAE/NX. As noted in the manual, it's advised to have it turned on. A BIOS check is the most important one, and google for your processor. Having 64 bit extensions doesn't mean you also have VT-x.

All tried. The BE-2300 has the Virtual Extensions, as well.
Last thing to do: I wrote the the manufacturer of the mainboard.

RFE: It would be good if there was a basic, standalone (?) routine to check the support for 64-bit guests; so that one doesn't actually download the whole lot, only to find that it is not supported.

there was a vt.iso available from vmware but i actually dont find it

I have encountered the same problem.

Go to the BIOS settings of your physical unit and ENABLE Virtual Technology / Vanderpool.

The name given to the VT-x/AMD-v option is likely to be different in each brand of BIOS. This thread is ancient, time to lock it I think. The requirements for running a 64-bit guest are described in the user manual, see "Supported Guests".
