Can 64bit VM use memory above 4Gb in 32bit guest?

Post by vfclists »

This question may be rather hopeful, can 64bit VM use memory above 4Gb in 32bit host?

I am running Windows on 32bit XP and wonder if with more than 4Gb memory install the VM can magically use memory above the 4Gb limit so I can run four 1Gb vms plus the regular host as well.

You can't run a 64bit os on a 32bit host period.

2.2.2 Manual:
1.6 64-bit guests
Starting with Version 2.0, VirtualBox also supports 64-bit guest operating systems.
Starting with Version 2.1, you can even run 64-bit guests on a 32-bit host operating
system, so long as you have suf?cient hardware.
Read the rest of the manual what you need to get this to work.

Replying to the actual Q:

No. VBox is limited to what the host OS can map which constrains the total VMs and also what the host OS allows for an individual process which is all a VM is in the host OS, so this remains magic and an unfulfilled wish.
