Virtualbox-2.2.2-46594 will not complete install on xp

Post by mumrah »

I've read and tried all the resolutions given in this forum.
Virtualbox-2.2.2-46594 will not complete the install. It will go thru the installer but hang and never give a install complete screen.
I left it running over nite to see if the install will complete it never did. Any ideas how to get Virtualbox-2.2.2-46594 installed?
This issue has never occurred in pervious releases. Why has this version become so hard to upgrade to or install? Let me know if additional information is needed to help troubleshoot.

I'm running
XP professional
service pack 3

Same here, XA SP3 and Vbox 2.2.0 r45846 installed. Above installs so far then backs itself out with no worthwhile messages or logs that i could see.

Try running a repair install on 2.2.0 then try again upgrading to 2.2.2.

You should try running this as administrator. (right click the install and left click on run as...the admin)
This version 2.2.2 was a maintenance release for 2.2.0. If you tried to upgrade from a previous version (before 2.2.0) you should have removed that version before installing the 2.20 or 2.2.2. I know it was not documented. To fix this you must run the 2.2.0 version and select repair. Do not reboot and install the version 2.2.2.

None of these resolutions worked. I get the same result the installer never completes the install.
Is there away to completely remove VB from my pc besides using add/remove programs? Then I can do a fresh install of 2.2.2.

Had already tried running as administrator, and it did not work, same problem.
As I have administrator status so ran 2.2.0 version and selected repair.
Although it requested reboot did as the instructions above.
No reboot then install version 2.2.2.
Several messages about software install for hardware not having passed Windows logo, overrode them.
Network adapter hung acquiring IP address, from Vbox install having stopped. Hand tweaked out of this.
Install completed and immediate test looks OK.

Just for my clarification Doesn't virtual box install ask to run as admin regaurdless. At least vista does. I know that 2.1.4 doesn't have the run as admin set.

Is right-click run as admin different from vista/xp asking to run as admin?

It should but as things happen install programs do not always elevate themselves and then you get a partial install. Making the decision to run as admin at the start keeps this from being a problem.

I had the same problem installing the latest 2.2.2 version. It kept rolling back my install. I figured it was because I was running an XP 64-bit host.
I was running 2.1.2 to start. So I figured I'll do an incremental upgrade from 2.1.2 to 2.2.0 - and it worked!
Then I upgraded from 2.2.0 to 2.2.2 and it worked too!!

Seems this might be the trick your looking for.

go to Program Files->Sun and rename the VB directory (don't delete it, you might need to rename it back), then try to install again. See if that helps (there is chance that it couldn't overwrite one of the files in that directory)

UPDATE: Try the solution in this thread http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=16242 and see if it helps (downgrade then upgrade again).

I think I got a good solution now.
here is what I did:

1.download the file VirtualBox-2.2.2-46594-Win.exe to c:\download
2.change the file name to VirtualBox.exe
3.open a command line and switch to c:\download, run the command:
c:\download>
c:\download>VirtualBox.exe -extract

you will get prompt that the files was extracted to
"C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Local Settings\Temp\VirtualBox"
4.there will be two files, one is for amd64, one is for x86.
choose the one that fit your system to install.

I finished install with out any problem again in this way, hope can help you.

I tried with muggy's instructions above but did not work on my Windows. Could it be some software conflict? a virus protection? I am using McAfee.
