Okay, I've looked everywhere for a solution to this. I'm running Windows Vista 64bit and I'm using VirtualBox to run Windows XP 32bit. It installed fine and everything works great, except that there isnt any sound. I've made sure that its enabled in settings, and I only have two choices, Null Audio Driver and Windows DirectSound. Also, ICH AC97 or SoundBlaster 16. On the guest, Direct X says there is no audio chip. Sounds and games or whatever says there are no devices. I tried installing realtek drivers and got a blue screen at the end of the installation and then nothing. I tried uninstalling reinstalling over and over and got nothing. I really need sound on this xp. Is there something I'm missing out on. By the way, on the host I have Conexant High Definition SmartAudio 221(which sucks). Please help me... Thanks.

The realtek drivers are what you need. I have not heard of anyone getting the BSOD yet but if this is the case there must be something wrong with the drivers. Try downloading the newest drivers direct from realtek and install them again. Be sure that you have selected the AC97 sound in your VBox settings.

Hey, actually I did try the drivers from the site and everything with constant BSOD. I finally got it to work by installing ac97intc.sys (which is Intel integrated audio) although Windows got pissed about it. It took hours of work to find out the correct solution but now I have sound! Now I just wish I could get directx 3d acceleration to work properly...

The DirectX part is not going to work. At least not yet. VBox 3d only supports OpenGL at this time.
I am glad that you found a solution for your sound though.

This is strange, as Windows XP should have the AC'97 driver build in. You might need at least SP1 or SP2 for it to have it though. Running Windows Update might actually give you the driver you need, without getting a BSOD.
