tcp connection hangs between guest and host

hi everybody
I've been investigating this for a while and decided to give it a shot with you here since I couldnt find something relevant
I am using Slackware as a host and XP as a guest on virtualbox 2.2
I will try to describe my problem as follows:
- everytime when I try to connect to my guest os (having a ftp server) through the ftp cmd line client in host os it hangs out after inserting the user name
this is a wireshark capture while trying to connect to my guest ftpd http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/6972/loggingissue.png
- everytime when I try to connect from my guest os through putty to my sshd/ftpd in my host os ... I insert the ip and port, click connect and then a black screen is displayed (in putty) ... checking netstat in linux (host os) shows an established connection between guest and host
- similarly .. after I establish a tcp connection on port, let's say 5555 through netcat and trying to chat it works only from guest to host ... if I type something from host that something won't be displayed on the guest screen (as I said before viceversa works )
note that ping works from guest to host and from host to guest ...
can I hear someone's opinion about this ?
thanks a million !
later edit: I am using bridge networking (as you can see in the png from that link)
