copying VM from desktop host to laptop host

Post by reiki »

Host Ubuntu 9.04
VBox version 2.2.2
Guest OS WinXP

Not sure why this didn't work right. I have in the past copied the entire .Virtualbox folder from one host to another always on the same desktop. Everything works.

Recently I got my wife a laptop (XPS M1710) and installed Vbox 2.2.2 on it. Then I figured I already had an XP VM on my desktop machine so I copied it over to her machine. The XP VM starts up just fine, but I noticed that it does not recognize the KEYBOARD of the laptop. Touchpad works. But no keyboard input. So... still in the VM I go to My Computer -> Manage and on to Device Manager. I REMOVED the keyboard from device manager and told XP to rescan for new devices.

It still did not pick up the keyboard.

I ended up doing a clean install of XP, and on that clean install the keyboard works fine, but I have to say I am curious if this is a bug of some kind, known issue, or if I just plain did something incorrectly.
Both machines (laptop and desktop) running same host OS and version, same VBox version.

any ideas?

I have no idea. I swap my VMs between my PC and Laptop all the time using my external hard drive where they are stored. Never had issues with them, and the hardware is very different.
Anything in the VM log files that could spill out why they keyboard didn't work? You have logs of the last 4 runs.

I'll have a look at the logs when I get home and see if they can tell me anything. Meanwhile I'd like to take that WinXP VM and make a copy of it under a new name and use it almost like a template. :) It's a real pain to start over, do all the Ms updates, get a virus scanner installed, install office, etc...
