Snapshots NOT Found After Backup/Restore

I’m running Vbox 2.1.4 PEUL with Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) host and Windows XP as guest. All Vbox files were installed in default locations on the system disk, DISK1 except snapshots. I used DISK2 for snapshots. Everything was working fine. Eventually, I backed-up DISK1 (but not DISK2) and installed some Ubuntu updates on DISK1. My system became unstable eventually so I restored the backed up version of DISK1. After the restoration of DISK1, Vbox complains that it cannot open the snapshots stored on DISK2. I checked the snapshot directory on DISK2 and found it empty!

I did not intentionally remove the snaphots. Did I do anything that would have implicitly remove those files? Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe the restore doesn't know about disk2(mount?) filesystem changed by the update on disk1? Unstability trashed disk2 as well without you knowing?

My question is are there any circumstances when VBox would delete snapshots due some
type of status/state inconsistency or incompatibility? If not, then something independent of VBox
must have caused this.

Ok. I've given up on trying to understand what happened here. I'm just trying to delete the
troublesome VM and move on. Problem is when I try to delete the VM it won't let me because there
are snapshots. When I try to delete the snaps, that fails because the associated VDI files are not found.

How can I delete all references to this VM and move on?

You could manually edit virtualbox.xml and take the VM out.

The VM I want to get rid of called WinXP.

Looking and virtualbox.xml, the line to delete appears to be
<MachineEntry uuid="{a8d6566b-f70b-4839-819c-55e76419fff7}" src="Machines/WinXP/WinXP.xml"/>

Is this the only line I need to delete?

Should I also remove ~/.Virtualbox/Machines/WinXP?

Thanks for your help.

Just try it after making a backup.
