[Solved] Guest additions Kubuntu9.04
[Solved] Guest additions Kubuntu9.04
I have installed Kubuntu 9.04 as a virtual machine on a Ubuntu 9.04 host,, but after mounting the VBoxGuestAdditions.iso I am able to see the iso & open it, but there appears to be no files within it. I have mounted the iso under the host & the files show up just fine, so the iso looks fine, but I am unable to see the files in the guest (Kubuntu).
If I go to the terminal & type cd /media/cdrom0 & then use ls to list the files I get nothing. I tried typing the command to install the guest additions but the command is not found.
Anyone know what is going on?

Re: Guest additions Kubuntu9.04
All you should need to do is click on the device tab at the top left of the guest and then install guest additions. If it does not pop up on the desktop then click unmout the cd and then install GA again.
The open a terminal and install the GA

Re: Guest additions Kubuntu9.04
Thanks for the suggestion, which I have tried. I am still not getting any joy. The iso looks as though it is mounted correctly, but ls gives no results & if I open the CD on the desktop it shows up empty. Rather peculiar. I think I will install another guest & see if I get the same result, maybe I will install Ubuntu 9.04 as a guest & see what happens then. If I get the same it may be a bug in the new version of VBox. Version 2.2.2
Re: Guest additions Kubuntu9.04
I have now installed Ubuntu 9.04 as a guest under a Ubuntu 9.04 host & the guest additions show up just fine & installed with no problems. This appears to be a problem with Kubuntu 9.04 . I will try it on a Windows host & see if I still have the problem. Any suggestions welcome.
Re: Guest additions Kubuntu9.04
I have now tried Kubuntu 9.04 as a guest under Windows host & I have the same problem.
It seems strange that the other OS's I have tried are fine, but the newer version of Kubuntu is not. Ubuntu 9.04 works OK. Any ideas anyone?

Re: Guest additions Kubuntu9.04
Kestrel, did the notifications appeared on KDE, announcing the a new device was added?
If not, try going on a terminal and doing: sudo mount /media/cdrom
then do a: ls /media/cdrom
and see if this works.

Re: Guest additions Kubuntu9.04
Thanks for the reply. There is no problem with the ISO being mounted as the cdrom device. I can see the Guest additions CD, but cannot see any of the contents of it, such as the VBoxLinuxAdditions-x86.run file. If I 'ls' in a terminal after cd'ing to the /media/cdrom directory I can still see no listing of files or directories. It is a rather strange problem that I have never come across before. I will just check to see if I have Kubuntu 8.10 installed as a VM & see if I get the same.MKhaos7 wrote:Kestrel, did the notifications appeared on KDE, announcing the a new device was added?

Re: Guest additions Kubuntu9.04
Strange indeed...
Can you post the output of the "mount" command here?
or take a look at the output of dmesg, to see if there is something wrong...
did you try mounting other isos on this same OS?

Re: Guest additions Kubuntu9.04
I will post the output from dmesg tomorrow when I get a chance, but for now I have found the bug report site & logged the bug. I don't think it is anything that I am doing. I have installed many OS's with VBox & always been able to mount the CD image OK.
I also thought of mounting other ISO's & I can see the files in those. I first thought that it was a problem with the guest additions ISO after installing the latest version, but I am able to see the files in other VM's & I can also mount the ISO under the host Ubuntu 9.04 & it looks fine from Windows. This is two separate machines, so it is not down to the machine. I can only see that it is a bug, unless others are not having this problem of course.

Why all the throuble? I've made a fine howto in the Linux Guests forum. Follow that. It's terminal based, all the stuff you need in case the ISO isn't mounted automatically by HAL.

To save me typing things twice, please have a look at the bug ticket for where I am now.

Re: Guest additions Kubuntu9.04
You haven't read my howto properly. I clearly state that AUTOMOUNTING doesn't always work. When clicking on the icon on the desktop will MOUNT the CD. If you open a terminal and enter mount /media/cdrom, then ls /media/cdrom you will get your files.

Re: Guest additions Kubuntu9.04
Sasquatch, I hadn't seen your how to previously until you posted the link in the bug report page.
Can't say that I have ever come across the automount not working previously, but these things often happen I suppose.
Thanks for the how to anyway. Should be useful to others as well.

Re: Guest additions Kubuntu9.04
This proves that it's better to wait with a bug report unless you get a confirmation on the forums. The howto is made for these kind of mistakes. You're not the first one, and trust me, not the last one either
. I pointed you in the right direction, but you somehow missed the howto, like others. I will change the way the howto's are shown, so this won't happen again, hopefully.
This is also something that comes with knowledge about the OS. Enjoy Linux, I know I do. And I switched to it from Windows just because it's more fun to work with. I hope you will feel the same and won't be afraid to use a terminal once in a while
