itunes/windows don't see ipod nano

I'm running VB on Ubuntu 8.10 host a with win xp guest. The host sees my ipod. The VB guest window manager (not sure that's what it's called) also sees the ipod as a usb device. The windows xp guest, and therefore itunes, does not see the ipod. The guest os sees other usb devices like memory sticks, backup hard drive, phillips usb phone, but not the ipod.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
John

Have you read the Manual and / or FAQ about USB?

If not, do this before asking again. Its all written there.

I do not know about John but I have read the links (and many more) you gave except the German one, don't read German. and I have not found an answer to Johns and my problem. I am running Ubuntu 9.04 with Virtualbox 2.2.2 with an Win XP guest. I have USB and USB 2 enabled but it seems that USB 2 devises are not seen in XP. I have a USB 1 printer and scanner that work perfectly but my USB 2 memory sticks, Video device, IPOD clasic and nano ar seen by Vertulbox and take control from the host but are never seen by the XP guest. I have searched for an answer but so far have not found one.
Now if there is help out there can someone give some constructive help,
Thanks,
Roger

OK. You checked all. Other devices are working.

That means: Not all devices / device classes are working properly. If not, wait for the next version with USB fixes.

There is nothing else you can do, if other devices are working.

It started working, though I'm not sure of the reason.

Having given up that it would work, I began checking out several of the linux (host) options; for one reason or another, they didn't suit my purpose. During the experimentation I did connect the ipod to some of these linux apps, so it could have altered the ipod in some way. Returning to itunes in VB I ran itunes diagnostics feature; as expected it said no ipod was connnected; at that point I realized I'd forgotten to reconnect usb devices to the virtual machine (having disconnected/reconnected so many times). I reconnected and this time the Windows wav file made the usb connection sound, something it hadn't done previously. Windows (VM) had found the ipod, but itunes still had not. After one more disonnect/reconnect with the VM window and itunes picked it up; the ipod needed to be fully "restored", but it worked - it has synced and all is well.

So after a week of it not working the only thing new was running the ipod diagnostic feature and having synced ipod to other linux host applications. I wish I could give a firm reason why this happened the way it did, but I'm not particularly computer literate.

Since your IPOD will connect then maybe there is hope. Anyway I have a relatively old motherboard that has both USB 1 and USB 2 ports. Since I can't get any USB 2 device to be seen maybe it is my USB 2 ports that VB doesn't like. I did read in one post somewhere that someone had to buy a USB 2 expansion card in order to get his IPOD to connect. I hate to do that without an assurer that it would fix the problem.

I have an older (4-5 yrs old) Toshiba laptop, Satellite M55-S135 (I can't believe VMs even run on this thing). I don't know much about the hardware like the mobo, but it definitely has a mix of USB 1 and 2. I've only ever gotten 1 of the 4 ports to work a USB2. That's what I was using when it first connected. I just tried it on one of the USB 1 ports and it also worked. I also just tried checking & unchecking the USB2 option box in the VM settings; it worked both ways.

Oh, btw, I'm using whatever the latest Vbox version is, 2.2.2. Ubuntu 8.10 host, WinXP guest, and the newest version of itunes. My nano is . . . 2nd gen? (it's the tall narrow one, a few years old, was only available in wht & black, and has the squared off sides)

*** I'm just winging it here, but I found this to be odd, and repeatable. When the windows/itunes/ipod link is working, I run the itunes diagnostics and it finds the ipod - sound great, right? But then, following the diagnostic, the connection no longer functions. If I again run itunes diagnostic - and it doesn't see the ipod - the next attempt to disable/enable the VM usb connection, it works again. I've repeated the sequence twice and it's done the same thing each time. It's like the itunes diagnostic flips a switch somewhere.

If my hardware/software is anything like yours, I'd be happy to do any experimenting if you think it would provide you with additional info.

Glad I saw this thread. Just tried it with my ipod and now it works. At first it didn't but as soon as I disconnected the ipod and reconnected it worked for the first time. I have been trying to get the ipod working for quite a few versions of virtualbox, and now it looks like 2.2.2 fixes it all up! Way to go for the Virtualbox developers.....

Patrick

I drew inspiration from these postings & resolved all my iPod / USB 2.0 connection to MS XP running within Ubuntu via VirtualBox - so that I can now use my ipod / itunes from Ubuntu just fine.

How I got there I've set out in detail at this conversation:

Hope it helps someone - leave a comment here if it does (or even doesn't) to guide someone else.
