I have just installed VB v2.2.2 on openSuSE v11.1. I am configured the group/user, and am ready to start VM up for the first time. Clicking on its entry in the chameleon menu causes the little VB icon to bounce in a convincing way, and there is a bit of HD activity, but not much, then the bouncing stops too. What's the next step?

Assuming that you added yourself to the vboxusers group it sounds like it did not install correctly.
Try rebooting the machine and if it fails to start I would suggest that you install again.
Remember that it requires SU permission to install.
