Frequent hung up on Windows Server 2008 64bit host on vb222
Hi All,
Thanks for the new release!!!
I have upgraded my Windows Server 2008 64bit host to the latest VB (2.2.2) today. What I noticed though is that I have several cases today already that vm guests hungs up during reboot and/or shutdown.
Anyone have the issue? And possible work-around?
Note:
I have updated guest additions to 2.2.2. My quest OS's ranges from XP, Vista, W2k3, w2k8.
Regards,
Technos

You sure that MS's hypervisor isn't active at the same time?

Re: Frequent hung up on Windows Server 2008 64bit host on vb222
I also have exactly the same issue since updating to v2.2.2.
My host is Windows XP Pro SP3 (x86) and it seems to happen with many different Guest OSs - Windows 2003 Server, Windows Vista, Ubuntu.
The issue is the the guest machine window won't respond during a reboot/shutdown which then in turn causes all VirtualBox Windows to lock up and become unresponsive. One of the VirtualBox.exe process will use 50% of the CPU (more likely 100% of one of the cpu cores but I can't tell) and I can't end process on any of the VirtualBox.exe processes.
I never had this problem until I updated to v2.2.2 yesterday. Now it happens almost every reboot/shutdown of a virtual machine.
Yesterday I wasn't able to shutdown my Host OS because the process had hung.
Has anyone else encountered this issue and have any ideas on a fix? If I roll back to the previous version of Virtual Box will my virtual machines work?
Thanks a lot
Ed

And my usb dongles is not working with the VMs anymore!!! Seems like there is a major regression on this release.

What if you disable vt-x?

The quest continues......
Anyone established a work-around?

You will have to debug this by disabling stuff on the Host like AV, any database server(s), services, etc...

Re: Frequent hung up on Windows Server 2008 64bit host on vb222
Ouch, that's not easy.
Note that this didn't happen prior to 2.2.2 or maybe not as frequent.

Re: Frequent hung up on Windows Server 2008 64bit host on vb222
You have to start somewhere to get to the bottum of it, maybe a complete VBox removal and re-install will help.
Or use a basic debugger to find which components are behind the hanging ones, like processexplorer.

What process are we talking here? Guest or host? As far as my investigation goes, it is the virtualbox.exe that is not responding.
Re: Frequent hung up on Windows Server 2008 64bit host on vb222
The Host ofcourse as thats what you said where it hangs.

He he he... don't have 64bit compiler here and it does not seems to be something easy. If anyone can walk me through how to do it then I might be tempted to just that.

Re: Frequent hung up on Windows Server 2008 64bit host on vb222
Hi all,
Just to let you know I got the same problem.
Host is Vista and guest is Ubuntu (Jaunty). It happened several times that during shutdown or reboot the VM freezes and then VirtualBox (as Techno.Scavenger I can't kill the VirtualBox.exe process then). After that it takes a loooong time to reboot the host system or I may even have to hard reboot my computer. Looks like a bug here
I hope anyone has an idea to work around this little annoying problem ... I've tried stuff such as process utilities but can't solve it. I'll keep you posted if I can find anything.
Regards,
Cecile
