I am running Windows Vista Home Premium X86 (32 bit) as host with Ubuntu 8.10 as the guest operating system in VirtualBox. I use DSL for my internet service and have a router connected to the DSL modem so that all of my computers can share the internet connection and so that they can also share files and a printer.
I had everything working perfect before upgrading VirtualBox to version 2.2.2 from the previous version. I installed the upgrade and everything works exactly the same. The guest additions did not need reinstalling nor did I need to change any other settings. The guest can get on the internet just fine. The only problem is that everytime I turn the PC on and go to "network" (host operating system-Vista) to share files with other PC's on my network, network discovery is turned off. I HAVE TO RE-ENABLE NETWORK DISCOVERY EACH TIME I TURN THE PC BACK ON. Besides this everything else works fine. I did try reinstalling the 2.2.2 upgrade, which will give you the option of repairing the install (since it detects that it is already installed), which I did. Still the same problem. I don't want to do a system restore to the time before the upgrade if at all possible, I want to fix this problem and still have the new version. I searched the forums and could not find an answer. If anyone can help or knows how to fix this I would be greatly appreciative! Also, to be honest it is only a couple of clicks to turn network discovery back on each time I need to share files, but this is not the way that the system is meant to work, the previous version of VirtualBox did'nt do this. Also new since this upgrade is that the Wi-fi button in the system tray that you click on to connect to a wireless network now shows two networks instead of just the one. One of them is my home network and the other says "Unidentified Network" and "limited connectivity" for it. It Vista's network and sharing center it says that this Unidentified network is "Virtual-box Host-only network". Thanks!
VBox 2.2.2 upgrade makes Vistas network discovery turn off
Re: VBox 2.2.2 upgrade makes Vistas network discovery turn off
Use Bridge not host-only, network discovery gets turned off when LAN things change("Unidentified Network" and "limited connectivity") for vista.

Re: VBox 2.2.2 upgrade makes Vistas network discovery turn off
Ok, so I open up VirtualBox 'without' turning the VM on, just the VirtualBox software. I highlight the VM and select settings, go down to network, under Adapter 1 (I'm only using one), in it's present state under 'attached to' says NAT, I assume this is where I change to Bridged adapter??
Also in Vista if you go to Network and Sharing center and select 'Manage network connections' from the left pane it will bring up the properties for the different network connections, if I right-click on the VirtualBox connection and select properties, it brings up the properties for the connection, in here do I tick the box next to VirtualBox Bridged Networking Adapter??
Step by step instructions on how to set the settings to bridged would be great! Thanks again...
