Accessing NTFS HD & USB NA

Post by sandman3838 »

Hello

I have a issues that I hope some can solve or point me in the right direction?
The issue is that from my WINXP (VBOX) I can't see my NTFS Hds, I can't see my shared Ubuntu folder and I don't have USB installing when I plug in a thumb drive? I would like to get one of these working so that I can move some files.

My system:
HOST = UBUNTU 9.04
GUEST = WINXP
VIRTUAL BOX = 2.2.2 (With Guest Add-ons Installed) in /home/NAME/.VirtualBox.

HARD DRIVES:
#3 - SATA Files (NTFS)
#1 - IDE Files (NTFS)
#1 - SATA (UBUNTU)

BACKGROUND UBUNTU:
From Ubuntu I have access to all the hard drives about the only thing I can't do is to create a shared folder anywhere other that in /HOME. What I get when I try to create a SHARED folder on one of my NTFS HDs is this:

net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot share path /media/IDE_FILES/VIDEOS_$ as we are restricted to only sharing directories we own.
Ask the administrator to add the line "usershare owner only = false"
to the [global] section of the smb.conf to allow this.

Now I don't know if this is the problem but I do have SAMBA installed in Ubuntu! I was thinking that since both Ubuntu and Winxp can read NTFS that with shared folder out there they could pass files back and forth.

As for the USB is is active in Sun Virtual Box settings I selected CORSAIR FLASH VOYAGER [110].

SEE THE ATTACHED SCREEN SHOT!

I do have another WINXP computer in another room and I do have access to it's shared folders from Ubuntu and Virtual Box.

I hope what I gave you here was enough info? If not just let me know? Ideally I would like to get the Hds working or the USB thumb drive?

Thanks for all your help?

Any suggestions?

Sorry for the delayed reply. How are your VBox explorations coming along?

To use shared folders, you need to install Guest Additions in you guest. Have you done this?

To have full network participation from the guest you need to select Bridged Networking.

You need to be careful using USB devices. This is covered in the UG + some FAQs in this Forum. Clearly the guest must have USB enabled and each device can only be owned by a host process or the VM. Have a read of the UG and use the bold text as search keys.
