clonezilla or VBoxManage with clonehd

Post by tomar.sk »

Hi,

From the following link:

http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic. ... 211#p65211

I understand the steps required to enlarge the VDI. However, for the sake of understanding and to make sure that I'm not wrong, I'd like to ask the following.

Instead of using clonezilla, if I use VBoxManage with clonehd option to clone the existing vdi, and then importing/attaching it to the new (enlarged) vdi, won't it work? Or, the clonehd option will bring along the maximum size limit of the previous vdi.

Of similar interest, if I want to move/copy the fully functioning VM (windows guest) from one linux host to another (same host OS, say opensuse 11.1, but different hardware), do I need to use clonehd with VBoxManage or clonezilla. Also, would it not attract windows activation issues in such a case, and if yes, how to cope up with it.

Thanks,
Satyendra

Cloning with clonehd does not allow resizing of VDI.
You can move any VM from any Host to another Host, just make sure the VM settings are the same on both ends, including the MAC value.

Hi vbox4me2,

Thanks a lot for your prompt response.

To make sure the VM settings are the same on both ends, do I need to manually set them during the set up of VM or just copy the xml file from one host to another. I guess in the latter case, the same uuid might cause the problem, and similarly, simply copying/moving the .VirtualBox directory won't work either.

Thanks again.
