Update from opensuse 10.3 to 11.1, and VB 2.1.4 to 2.2.2

Hi,
I'd like to make two updates for my existing setup (linux host, windows guest); from opensuse 10.3 to 11.1, and VB 2.1.4 to 2.2.2. The latter is not required per se, but just to run the latest system. Regarding the VB update, from the various posts I read, this is what I understood.
(1) Backup my existing .VirtualBox directory.
(2) Remove existing VB version, and THEN install new version.
However, in the scenario of opensuse update, do I need to consider any other precaution. As such, after updating from opensuse 10.3 to 11.1, I can install VB 2.2.2 afresh. Then, how will I make it to read my existing VMs (and their settings). Will it be automatically done or some hiccups may be expected?
Thanks in advance.
