Additions on 64-bit Vista in 2.1.4, 2.2.0, 2.2.2

Post by bqbauer »

I've looked and looked here and I've been waiting patiently for a fix, but since VB 2.1.4 guest additions in 64-bit Vista have not worked properly for me on my OpenSolaris host (64-bit, 2008.11). The guest display won't resize or properly enter seamless or full screen mode. The mouse pointer shows the Vista pointer below my OpenSolaris pointer. 32-bit Vista is not affected, nor are other 32 or 64-bit guests, such as XP (32-bit), Ubuntu 8.x and 9.x, OpenSolaris, or Solaris 10u6. I've repeated the problem on multiple hosts. I think I even reproduced the problem with an XP host. I've also installed a Vista 64-bit guest from scratch each time with no success. I never had this problem prior to 2.1.4.

With 2.2.2, I noticed that the additions are installing a secondary, inactive, graphics adapter called "(Default Monitor) on VirtualBox Graphics Adapter", but when I enable it, it just flickers endlessly until I shut down the guest.

Anyone know what's up with this? Before I present the details of all my settings, perhaps someone already knows that this is a wide-spread problem or has a fix. I really had my hopes up for 2.2.2, but I only use Vista for testing a few work related things, so I'll survive.

After more tests, it appears this is a problem with 64-bit Vista Home Premium. Vista Ultimate has none of these issues. Two different hosts with Vista Home Premium installed from both OEM and Retail distributions are having the same problems.

Again, this is all in reference to the 64-bit version of Vista as a guest. 32-bit hasn't displayed any of these issues for me.

I installed Vista Business and Vista Home (not Premium), both 64-bit. The problems I described exist only with the two Home products. Vista Business and Ultimate work perfectly fine. Now I'm not sure I ever installed less than Vista Business in VB, so this may actually have been a problem before 2.1.4.

Bug report and log submitted to VB, but still looking for any workarounds. Sorry for talking to myself in this thread, but my initial post was before I decided to test the different Vista versions.

I am having similar issues with VBox 2.2.2, Vista 64 Home Prem. guest on an Ubuntu 8.04 amd64 host. In particular, I can't get accelerated video working - the guest driver adds a second video adapter, but when I switch to it in display properties the vista seems to begin switching video modes rapidly and continuously, filling the window with junk. Without decent video, I'm dead in the water... anybody have a clue what's going on?

2.2.4 is out and may or may not have your fix. See change log to verify http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Changelog
Also have you submitted a bug report on these issues? Click on the link below my post and register a new report if none is already there. You will need to setup a new account there though sorry.

It is definitely not fixed in 2.2.4. I tested it with a fresh install of Home Premium 64-bit. I thought I had submitted a bug, but now I'm thinking I didn't. Will have to follow up on this.

I see newer bug reports with more obscure or suspect information that are getting attention, yet this bug that impacts a specific version of Vista has no indication that it has been seen or assigned. Is there a way to alert someone to this bug? It's probably not been noticed before because the affected Vista version is likely less popular than others. I'd just like to see that someone realizes the additions for Vista have a particular compatibility issue. I only use it for testing myself, but not being able to properly use the guest additions can be frustrating.

Since you added you comment it goes to the top of the list and makes it more noticeable. So hang in there.

I am also experiencing this problem.

Host: Ubuntu 8.04 64-bit, VirtualBox 3.0.4
Guest: Vista 64-bit Home Premium SP2, VirtualBox Guest Additions 3.0.4

Full screen, seamless and auto-resize doesn't work.

Try in the Windows guest to click on devices tab at the top and then click unmount CD, then click install guest additions.
Watch to see that they are installed. You should need to answer at least (2) prompts while they are being installed. Reboot the guest after the install.
Then use the host key to test. (host+f)=full screen (host+l)=seamless.

Perryg, I've install the VirtualBox Additions just fine, but the full screen, seamless and auto-resize features aren't working on Vista Home Premium 64-Bit. However, they work just fine for the 32-Bit version.

Any thoughts?

So this problem remains unresolved. The fullscreen, seamless and auto-resize features of VirtualBox 3.0.4 don't work in Vista Home Premium 64-Bit. Is Sun addressing this issue? The open ticket hasn't been updated in two months.

I just added a comment to the ticket indicating that the problem still exists in 3.0.4. http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/3865
