2.2.0 OSE gives 1909 error but 2.2.2 PUEL works OK

Post by g0ukb »

Running Ubuntu 8.10 with 2.6.27-11-generic kernel I compiled the latest 2.2.0 source code and all worked OK. However on trying to start a VM I consistently get a 1909 initialisation error, I downloaded the 2.2.2 Intrepid PUEL release and that works fine.

I would rather use the OSE version. Since the PUEL version works OK I must have my vboxusers set up correctly so am guessing some inconsistency between my vboxdrv module and kernel. Any thoughts on diagnostics/fix?

Thanks

Brian

Thanks - 2.2.0 was the latest OSE version yesterday morning - things move quickly :-)

Just tried the 2.2.2 OSE and exactly the same problem. I followed all the instructions on the build instruction page for making a non-hardened build, built the kernel module, modprobed it, chmoded it to 660, checked I'm in the vboxusers group but still 1909. 2.2.2 PUEL works fine and dandy.

Any thoughts on how to debug?

Thanks - I'd found most of those links yesterday.

Anyway SORTED - turns out that /etc/init.d/vboxdrv did not have an INSTALL_DIR setting so was failing on building the kernel driver. Manually setting INSTALL_DIR=/mydir/.../release/bin and re-running 'vboxdrv setup' fixed the problem.
