64-bit guest OS on 32-bit host OS

Hello,
I am attempting to install VMs for 64-bit guest OSes on my 32-bit host OS (Windows XP).
In the documentation for VirtualBox it states this is possible providing you enable hardware virtualization individually for each VM but I cannot find out how to perform this.
It appears that you can (or should be able to) adjust these settings in the Machine>Settings>General>Advanced tab for the selected machine--there are checkboxes for "Enable VT-x/AMD-V" which the documentation states is the setting to provide hardware virtualization for Intel processors that is supported by VirtualBox beginning with v2.1.
I am running VirtualBox v2.1.4 so I should be able to use this feature, however when I attempt to set this the checkbox is greyed out so that I cannot check it as the documentation states I should be able to! Does anyone know how to do this??
The documentation in VirtualBox also continues to speak of the hardware virtualization and nested paging within the same context but this checkbox is also greyed out so I cannot select it either--I wonder why the documentation states we can, but then it is not available??
Sorry, but apparently I cannot upload images to show you the checkboxes on my system...
HELP!!
I really think I should be able to on my system since the Intel processor in my Dell T3400 is rated as a 64-bit processor, is this a known bug in VirtualBox that I have overlooked??
Thanks for your help,
Matt.
