Age of Empires II slow

I recently set up VirtualBox on Ubuntu Jaunty with Windows XP SP3 as a guest. This was in order to play AOE2. Whilst the game works fine it seems quite sluggish compared to playing it on windows. I have allocated 512mb of RAM to the guest, and 64mb of videoram, plus I've enabled hardware acceleration, any ideas what I could do to speed up this game?

Check the system requirements for that game. I think it needs DirectX, and VB doesn't support that, only OpenGL. If DX fails, it will fall back on software rendering, which takes up a lot of CPU power. Not enough CPU means low performance.

So if I install wine D3D it might work?

Possibly, yes.

Note that there is currently an issue using WineD3D with Virtual Box 2.2.0. An explanation can be found in the WineD3D thread.

The game didn't work for me in version 2.2. However, I downgraded to 2.1.4 and it's working perfectly and smoothly. I've got DirectX 9.0c installed, but it probably doesn't affect it because VBox doesn't support it anyway.
