Hi,
after starting the Virtualbox, Ubuntu 9.04 doesn't automount USB devices anymore.
I can add them into the VBox, and I can also mount them manually under Linux.
But they aren't automounted anymore. I would guess that Virtualbox blocks hald anyhow, but I have no idea to figure out what happens there. The syslogs I've read didn't provide any information.
I have first used Virtualbox 2.1.4 with Ubuntu 9.04, then upgraded to Vitrualvox 2.2, but the problem stays the same.
After shutting down Virtualbox it seems to work again.
With Ubuntu 8.10 everything has been fine.
Regards
Mr.Green

Re: hald problems
This should help you.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/366296
You need to add usb_storage to /etc/modules
