Parts of Screen Invisible

Hello,
I've got a display problem. Parts of the screen are invisible in seamless mode (I can toggle back and forth between modes, every other mode displays the whole screen). By this I mean that you can see, for example, the top-left corner of one screen, the bottom fifth of another (screenshot) and not everything on the screen is...erm... clickable?
It can be fixed by adjusting the resolution, but that is difficult because I have to position the window in such a way that the desired button is in a clickable area, and then move it to position the next button, and I can't really see which areas of the screen are actually clickable (there's probably a better word but I don't know it). Changing the resolution goes like this:
"The display control panel is unable to change the display settings. You may not have the appropriate administrative rights to change these settings." (I click okay.)
"The display settings being saved are invalid. Please try a different combination of settings." (I click okay, and try again.)
... then everything looks normal.
My setup:
Host: Ubuntu 8.10
Guest: XP with SP2
VirtualBox 2.2.0
Anyone know what might be amiss?
