[On Laptop] Host key don't works

Post by chrislabricole »

Hi all, :)

I've got a big problem because I can't redefine my Host Key (to go out the Virtual Machine window).

When I go to : File > Preferences... > Input
I click on (By default) "CTRL RIGHT", to change the host key. Because I haven't got two CTRL on my laptop's keyboard.
And that don't works ! I've tried all key of my keyboard, and anyone works ...
I've tried the Virtual Keyboard (By Microsoft), and that don't works too :/

The Laptop is on Vista...

Thank you for your help,
Regards.

Did you actually click INSIDE the noted area where the text of the Host key is?

I don't know if this is a Windows only problem but the Host key does not change for me either. Click the noted area, hit another key, nothing happens. I just change the key combo in the xml file.

Correct, tested this in a VM with 2.2 installed, Host key cannot be changed from GUI.

Yes, I have this same problem. ( I am using win xp pro on my toshiba and win98se with virtual box. )

I don't have a right cntl key either on my toshiba tecra laptop.

How to change the key combo in the xml file?

Where is this xml file to edit and what program do you use to edit this file.

Thanks.

It's in your user profile. Folder name .VirtualBox/VirtualBox.xml. If you can't get it to work by editing the key itself, then install an older VB in a VM, change the setting there and copy the key code from there. You don't have to create or run a VM inside the VM.

Okay, it's a known bug in the current version 2.2.0. It was't there in 2.1.4

Someone figured a workable solution, as this bug will be fixed in the next version release.

You can change it to "Right Alt" for now by doing the following.

Go into dos prompt.

Go to the director that has VBoxmanage.exe (c:\program files\sun\xvm virtualbox\) and type the following

VBoxManage.exe setextradata global GUI/Input/HostKey 165

Then restart Virtual Box. At least you have Right Alt to work with. I check it out and it works.
