unable to mount guestadditions.iso

Ubuntu 8.0 is my host and I have fresh install of win2k as my guest. The mouse works fine however I can not get the screen resolution any better than 800x600. I am unable to mount the VBoxGuestAdditions.iso correctly. I have followed the instructions in the manual and have specified the path etc. However when I try to look on the "CD" for the .exe, I get an error something to the effect that an invalid operation has been performed. If I unmount the iso and mount the physical CD, I can read from the drive.

I'm doing something wrong, but I don't know what.

All you should need to do is start the guest and then in the upper left corner of the window click on device and then install guest additions.
If it does not start the install click on unmount the CD and then click on install guest additions again. It should auto start the install in windows.

That's the problem. It's not starting. Or at least nothing visibly is happening. When I add the guestadditions, via the menu, nothing happens. It like a a dead menu item. It's not grayed out, it is active, but nothing results from selecting it.

Is there a logfile somewhere where that I can view what's happening?

Did you (unmount the CD and then click on install guest additions again)?
If you still have problems go into the setting of your VBox for this machine and unmount the CD first.
Start the machine and then click on the machine tab and install guest additions.

Yes, I unmount the CD. Then I mount the .iso and selected the "install guest additions". At that point if I double click the CDROM drive, I get the error.

Unmount the CD and then open the guest (you say it is Windows) Don't mount the CD. After the guest is running click machine and install guest additions and it should auto start and all you should need to do is follow the instructions. Does it not happen this way for you?

I don't know about the rest of y'all, but I had an awful time figuring out how to install the Guest additions for VirtualBox. If someone else has the same problem I had, here's how I finally did it:

To install the guest additions:

o fully install the guest and boot it

o in the guest, install the kernel headers

o Note on the VirtualBox GUI if CD/DVD-ROM entry shows the guest adds as .iso file.

o in the GUEST: the guest adds may show on the file manager as mounted.
o if not, look in /media/cdrom, see if there are files.
o If not, mount the iso file
http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/how-to-mo ... linux.html

o open the guest adds drive as root. Click on the .run file. A terminal should come up, and the installation messages.

At least, the cursor is freed up, but the screen re-sizing feature is not working.

Are you logging into the windows machine as administrator or superuser?
Also what is the exact error you get when you try to mount the CD, browse, and click on the exe.

Yes, I am logged in as an administrator. I'm not at the box right now, so I can't give you the error verbatim. But a dialog box pops up and within it something like :

D:\
application error

Oh, one thing I noticed, is the .iso is really small. I think it's around 245 bytes? Shouldn't it be bigger? The version on VirtualBox on the Ubuntu box 1.5.6 if I remember correctly. Maybe this is part of my problem?

I just checked (remotely) the file size is 245 bytes. I looked at the files sizes for the VBoxGuestAdditions.iso on virtualbox's download page and the 1.6 iso is 9MB. So it appears I have a defective or corrupt iso? 1.6.0 is the earliest version I found on VB's site.

SOLVED: unable to mount guestadditions.iso

This morning I completely removed all guest additions and installed them again. As I was do so, I got the prompted that no guest additions were found and did I want to download it. I clicked yes and the next dialog box should the same 1.5.6.iso with a file size of 245 bytes. I went ahead and let the DL complete and nothing happened, no "auto start". I then went and selected the 1.6.0 iso and the install went normally with the auto start and I now have the VBoxGuestAdditions which appear [at this point] fully functional.

Whew! Thanks for all your help. But, what's up with the corrupted 1.5.6.iso file?

This is just freakin' awesome. I'm in my win2k guest now....

I tried downloading the iso manually and it gives an forbidden error, maybe a redirect to the new download server can be made.

Code: Select all

wget http://www.virtualbox.org/download/1.5.6/VBoxGuestAdditions_1.5.6.iso
--00:09:51-- http://www.virtualbox.org/download/1.5.6/VBoxGuestAdditions_1.5.6.iso
           => `VBoxGuestAdditions_1.5.6.iso'

Downloading the iso from the above mentioned address and mounting it manually solved the problem, thanks a lot!
