Whatever I try, I cannot manage to get an internet connection in my guest OS, neither in Windows XP nor in Windows Vista. I'm running Virtual Box 2.2.0 in a Windows Vista host OS. I read the manuel, and tried both NAT and briged network, neither of them worked. With NAT, I was able to create a shared folder, but the network in the guest OS is still local only, no internet access.
I suspect that something is wrong with my network settings, especially the extended settings seem weird to me: do the two dropdowns really need to be emtpy? Here's a screenshot showing my current settings:

Reinstall VBox as administrator (right click the install file and select run as administrator). Select repair and when done reboot. Reinstall GA if needed. and reboot.

Ok, I did what you suggested, I even completly removed VBox from my computer, rebooted, reinstalled it and rebooted again. Nothing changed, still no internet. Do you have any other ideas what could be wrong?

NAT is a known issue, where the DHCP doesn't provide the Windows Guest with an IP. Work around is setting it with static (see the Bugtracker, bug report 3655 IIRC.
That, or use Bridged Networking to make your VM a part of your network.

Not really. This works for almost everyone.

You could try to uninstll completely and download version 2.1.4 it is more stable and wait for the next release Version 2.2.x to come out.

Other than that you would need to login to bugtracker and submit a ticket. The link is in my sig. below. You will need to setup another account there though because it is a different section.

You stated it does not work in either NAT or bridged.
There is one other thing that you can try. As Sasquatch states there is a known problem with NAT in this version.
I have found that using the second adapter in the VBox settings works around this problem.
You setup the (2) adapter to use bridged or NAT and then make sure that is has a check mark in Enable network adapter.
Take the Check mark out of the first adapters Enable network adapter and see if it works.

Perry, I stated in your own topic where you found out about this "solution" that it doesn't always work. I got a nice DHCP today, but I also had a few times where it didn't work on boot.

I upgraded from 2.1.4 to 2.2.0 on a Windows XP SP3 host, and ended up with bridged network not working. Under Bridged Network Details, Bridged Network Adapter listed nothing. So, after finding this thread, I tried uninstalling VirtualBox so I could reinstall it, and it wouldn't let me uninstall. The progress bar would move the right, the desktop icon would disappear, then the progress bar would go back down to the left, and the desktop icon would reappear!

In short, VirtualBox 2.2.0 created some bogus network adapters. I first had to delete the Program Files\Sun\xVM VirtualBox directory, reboot, then manually delete the bogus network adapters. Then I could run the 2.2.0 installation, tell it to Repair, and finally it got itself straightened out. Running fine now.

I'm posting these details in case anyone else encounters a problem upgrading to 2.2.0.
