Virtualbox on Ubuntu 8.10 network problems with XP

Post by Jonesie »

I have virtualbox 2.2.0 running on Ubuntu 8.10.

I have a XP VM running and am having trouble setting up networking.

I would like the VM to use the host interface wlan0. I've tried using NAT which hasn't worked so trying the host interface option with these settings:

NIC: Host Interface
NIC Device: Am79C970A (don't actually know what this is but have tried all from dropdown list)
Host Interface: wlan0 (also tried tap0)

When I run the VM i get the following error:
Sun VirtualBox SDL GUI version 2.2.0
(C) 2005-2009 Sun Microsystems, Inc.
All rights reserved.
Failed to power up VM! Error info:
Failed to open/create the internal network 'HostInterfaceNetworking-' (VERR_INTNET_FLT_IF_NOT_FOUND).
Unknown error creating VM (VERR_INTNET_FLT_IF_NOT_FOUND)
Can anyone help me set up NAT or the Host Interface?

Cheers,
Jonesie

NAT has a problem (fixed in next update) but have you tried Bridged mode? Also you might want to reinstall VBox and choose repair. There was a problem with the installer.

This error occurs when the kernel module for the Bridged option isn't installed properly. Please run

Code: Select all

sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
and try again. Make sure that you have the kernel headers installed, as those are needed to be able to create kernel modules.

Hi thanks for the replies.

I've tried:

Code: Select all

sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
which didn't work so i unistalled VB and installed everything through synaptic and now VBoxGtK will not open!

virtualbox-ose
virtualbox-ose-source
virtualbox-ose-gues-source
vboxgtk
virtualbox-ose-dbg
virtualbox-ose-guest-utils

Any idea's why?

VBoxGTK is not a part of VB. VB uses a Qt interface. Remove the OSE version, purge it's config and install the PUEL version from the website. Make sure that you have the kernel headers and build-essential packages. After that, it should all work.
