Disable Wake-On-LAN

Post by fangthorn »

I do not need or require my machine to wake up after being powered off, other than when I press the power button to switch it back on again.
So, it came as a surprise to me, having installed VirtualBox and successfully created a guest machine, that it woke up few minutes after having been hibernated.
I immediately thought VirtualBox had modified the Wake-On-LAN setting on my physical network card, but this was not the case.
So I rebooted the machine and checked the BIOS settings but these were still set to disabled for the various wakeup settings.
This was puzzling, so, to confirm that I wasn’t going mad, I disconnected the network cable, expecting the machine to hibernate properly, but to my surprise it woke up again a few minutes later! So it had to be something in the software that was doing this.
The solution was to disable the “Virtualbox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter” which I found configured in Network Connections. I assume this was created during the installation of VirtualBox. I expected this to adversely affect network connections of my guest, which was set up to use “Bridged” networking, but it continued to work fine.
Hopefully this will be useful to someone.

Check the interface hardware properties, that might be a setting that states that the device is allowed to bring the computer out of standby/hibernate.
