VBOX VISTA CANNOT ACCESS INTERNET VIA XP HOST
Hello,
I am using the following configuration to test Vista under VirtualBox:
HOST PC ( with VirtualBox installed ):
==============
Windows XP SP3
Broadband Linksys modem. ( WAG45XXX )
2GB RAM
VirtualBox 2.2 with Host-only network settings running Vista Ultimate 32 SP1 at same NetworkID with the host.
The Host XP internet connection is working properly, able to see and access Vista public folder but I cannot get
the VirtualBox's Vista connect to Internet.
I have installed "Guest Additions", tried all available network options from the settings: NAT, BRIDGE, INTERNAL and
Host-only network, I still cannot get Vista in VirtualBox connect to internet.
Please advise.
Ricky Gai.

With Host only the guest can talk to the host only. Set the network to NAT.rickygai wrote:VirtualBox 2.2 with Host-only network

Re: VBOX VISTA CANNOT ACCESS INTERNET VIA XP HOST
i have set to NAT but still won't work, is there any settings need to be done ?
Like the screw driver button next to the "Attached to: NAT" option which
has the following informations:
Host Settings
Bridged Network Adapter:
Internal Network:
Host-only Network Adapter:
Guest Settings
Guest MAC Address: ( I have reset and give it a MAC address here ).
Cable connected ( checkbox )
Please advise.

Try Bridged Network Adapter

Re: VBOX VISTA CANNOT ACCESS INTERNET VIA XP HOST
OK, the VBOX VISTA is able to connect to internet by using Bridge Network.
However, I discovered something new about VirtualBox 2.2 and here is the process
experienced to get VBOX VISTA internet connection and folder sharing run successfully
under XP Host:
1. To connect to internet under VBOX VISTA, goto Settings->Network, enable Enable Adapter 1 with:
Adapter Type: PCnet-PCI II (Am79c970A)
Attached to: Bridged Network
2. Next to the "Bridged Network" there is a "Screw Driver" button, click on it and you will be prompted with
"Bridged Network Details" windows, select the following options:
Checked the "Enable Network Adapter" checkbox.
Host Settings ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bridged Network Adapter: Intel(R)82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection
Guest Settings -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest MAC Address: < Click on the right green color button to yield a MAC address here >
Checked the "Cable connected" checkbox.
3. To enable XP host for folder read/write I/O access and browse through VBOX VISTA's public folder ( you may be prompted for the VISTA's Admin login username and password ), we add the second Adapter 2, goto Settings->Network, click on the "Adapter 2" tab:
Checked the "Enable Network Adapter" checkbox.
Adapter Type: PCnet-FAST III (Am79c973)
Attached to: Host-only Network
4. Makesure you set the NetworkID the same as the XP host under VBOX VISTA later. This will prompt you to restart.
5. Now, you are able to connect to internet under VBOX VISTA and browse through VISTA public folder via XP host's
"My Network Places"->"View workgroups computers".
6. DONE.
Hopes, this helps

Re: VBOX VISTA CANNOT ACCESS INTERNET VIA XP HOST
However, the above configuration only works on networked computers environment.
I have tested VBOX VISTA on a single XP host where connected to a single broadband router modem directly,
the bridge connection seems cannot start, no matter which network card I assigned it via the
"ScrewDriver" icon button.
Please advise.

Re: VBOX VISTA CANNOT ACCESS INTERNET VIA XP HOST
If your host is connected to your internet modem directly, without a router between them, then your Host has most likely an internet IP address. Your provider won't support multiple IP addresses on the same connection.
If the Host has an IP in the range noted in this wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Private_network, then it should work, if the router modem is configured for multiple computers.

Ok, did you use NAT by any chance? See this bug report: http://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/3655
