Vista + Movie Maker: Video card doesn't meet requirements!?!

Post by spamrefuse »

Hello,

I have installed Vista Home Premium Edition as a guest OS on Fedora 10 host.
This Vista has the most recent updates, and it has VirtualBox Guest Additions installed.

Everything seems to work fine, except when I run programs as:
Windows Movie Maker
Windows DVD Maker

I then get a window pop-up, which says:
"Video card does not meet minimum requirements.
Windows Movie Maker cannot start because the video card
installed on this computer does not meet he minimum
system requirements. [Learn more] about this problem."

Clicking on [Learn More] pops up the general info on Video card settings.

This problem occurs with or without the 3D-acceleration checked in the VirtualBox settings.

Any idea what is the problem?

I also have Windows XP (sp3) as a guest OS; Windows Movie Maker works fine in there!

Thank you.
Rob.

Simple, Movie Maker wants to use DirectX, VB doesn't support that. Only OpenGL is possible.

I've tried that, but to no avail.

Installed the 'patch' from Microsoft that should deal with the not-matching video card
requirements......but the same window with the same complaints pops up when
I start Windows Movie Maker......very annoying.

Does Windows Movie Maker on Vista guest OS with a Linux host work for others?

Windows XP uses an other version than Vista does, so there are probably some features that needs DirectX, like playback/preview. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the issue.

In Vista...you can't burn DVD's unless your GPU supports pixel shaders 3.0.
No wonder MovieMaker wants something from GPU as well.

Update: indeed MM that comes with Vista 6.0.6000 displays this error when inside a VM, however using MM 2.1.4026 (the XP SP3 version) works fine with Vista.

That was the reason for my post :-)
<snip>
If you get an error message that says, "Windows Movie Maker cannot start because your video card does not support the required level of hardware acceleration or hardware acceleration is not available", download and install Movie Maker 2.6.

Hi,

Thanks for your responses.

I actually did install Windows MM 2.6 for Vista using the MM26_ENU.msi file provided on the Microsoft
web page (for the link see an earlier post in this thread). On that web page it says that Vista users, who
get an error message about "...Video card requirements...", should install this msi file on top of already
installed Vista MM.
(it seems that in Vista one cannot uninstall OS parts, such as MM, unlike in XP).
Then, after installing MM26_ENU.msi, I still get the error message that my video card is insufficient.

And, yes, using XP as the guest OS, I have no problems with MM. It's only with Vista.

Regards,
Rob.

I don't find the "solution" you're talking about on that web site;
or am I overlooking it?
I only see paragraphs that tell me how great the software is,
not telling me what to do when in trouble.....

This is not in the scope of this forum. Please go to a Microsoft Movie Maker forum for more help.

Ehm, you could have searched a bit more. Just going to the MS website and enter "movie maker" gives the results you want.
