Upgrade to 2.2 Error -- Conflict with installed Ver. 2.1

I received notification that VirtualBox 2.2 was available for download for Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy). I downloaded the file and started the installation process but got Error: Conflict with installed version VirtualBox 2.1.

I am running VirtualBox on two machines of differing hardware, but both running Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy). I get this error on both machines.

Downloading and setting up the Version 2.1 worked flawlessly and has been preforming well. Since I see other problems with starting VMs in ver. 2.2, maybe I need to wait anyway.

I've had this problem a few times when upgrading: You'll need to uninstall VirtualBox 2.1 yourself, but do not purge the install! Make sure that your configuration files stay on your system.

After v2.1 is removed, you can install v2.2 without any problems.

It's in the VirtualBox FAQ: How to upgrade properly. A purge doesn't really matter, I usually do that though. Config files that are really important, like your VMs, won't be removed, only the config in /etc.
