Guest shuts down unexpectedly

Post by joebednarz »

Setup:
  • Dell Precision T3400, Quad Core, 8GB RAM
    Ubuntu 8.10 (64-bit) on host
    VirtualBox 2.2
  • Fedora Core 10 (32-bit) on guest - 2 instances, 2GB RAM each
    Internal network in use
    Guest additions installed
My problem is that (usually) after the screen saver kicks in or after I've left the guest instances alone for a while and come back to them to check on some process, one (never both) vm will shutdown on its own... not an orderly shutdown either... it is a hard, going bye-bye, pull the plug shutdown.

I don't have any log files that point a problem to speak of, so I'm posting to see if anyone else has had this problem or if someone might have a solution. I know this just the basics, so if you have questions, happy to post answers and/or files.

Many thanks!

Did you read thru these:

I guess if it happens with a screensaver it might be opengl/3d VM issues.

Well, I'm certain that that is the issue... I have 3D acceleration turned off.

It isn't always when the screensaver kicks in that the shut down occurs... I can just move from one desktop screen (on my host) to another and come back to the virtual machine, click inside and it dies.

Read through a few of the links your provided... very interesting reading. Still reading some, but nothing seems to fit my situation.
