Eee Pc 701 + VirtualBox + USB HD: Is it possible?

Hi everybody I'm a happy owner of an Asus EeePc 701 and of course you know that it has only 4G of hard disk. I installed a lighter legal version of Windows XP Pro SP2 that leaves, after installing some basic software, something more that 1G. Sometimes I need to use Ubuntu for software developing and testing and I tried several ways to use it like installing it on a SDHC Card or on a pen drive but performances were really bad. Then I thought: I can use VirtualBox to guest Ubuntu!! But there's not enought space of the HD, but i have an external usb disk of 160G. I tried to create a new Virtual Disk using that usb disk but it's not working.. I've the PUEL version of virtualbox 2.2.0.

The error is the following:

"Unable to allocate and lock memory. The virtual machine will be paused. Please close applications to free up memory or close the VM.
Error ID: HostMemoryLow "

I'm getting crazy to fix this problem

Your pc probably has 512mb ram, thats not enough to do anything with VBox, v2.2 also has some memory issues, try 2.1.4, if that trows the same error you need more ram.
