Sharing network with the guest for cases not having a router

I encountered a problem that my computer is physically connected to a ADSL modem given by my ISP.
I go online using this modem and the PPPoE client of Windows Vista.

The situation is that the bridging network option in VirtualBox 2.2 is not working for this kind of connection, as the adapter would kill the connection once I started up the guest.

Also I would like to know more about the option "NAT" for network adapters. I am not sure how the NAT thing works, as such connection in guest is always turned to "Limited or no connectivity"(in WinXP_ in my guest and always return me with IP of "169.254.*.*" (which is the link-local addresses).

As a contrast, I used the free VMware server and they seems to provide some way for connecting internet by sharing that connection. However I don't know how to properly share the connection in here, with support of NAT port forwarding (as my guest have some services running).

Thank you.

If you do not have a router you can setup Vista to share the Internet connection and setup your guest accordingly.

Here is a link to Microsoft that explains how. By the way you too can find this by using Google. :)

Actually I have a router. But sometimes for some reason I choose to have directly connection for my host, and at that time there is not much ways for me to do such thing.

For the Microsoft sharing one, it doesn't support NAT.

You can make a software nat via a VM or even via the Host, search around with google.
