I have used successfully VB 2.1.4 until I have decided to update to 2.2.0 , with the result that audio is not working anymore and I couldn't find a way to go back to the old version. Host is Linux AMD 64 Red Hat, guest WinXP
Any help ?

I cannot imagine that this problem is a result of the upgrade from VirtualBox 2.1.4 to VirtualBox 2.2.0. We didn't change anything regarding audio. With once exception: When you create a new VM, this VM will have ALSA sound enabled. So if you created a new VM, start it and your ALSA sound system on the host is not capable of mixing channels, then the sound will stop working. Please check if your VM settings.

Apart from this, PulseAudio is the proposed audio backend on recent Linux distributions.

And even though you would use PulseAudio, ALSA will still work, though with poor quality.

I had this kind of problem when running 2.2.0 Beta and Ubuntu 9.04 Beta.
Things worked for me when i changed the audio output in the VM from Alsa to Pulseaudio (even if I wasn't using Pulseaudio). The issue got away after 2.2.0 final.

Try changing the output device on your VM and see if this helps.

Cheers,
KM

I was using VirtualBox 2.1, on my Ubuntu 8.04 64-bit host. The sound stopped working in all guests, including Linux and Windows. I have tried setting it to either Pulseaudio or ALSA, but no difference. I have also now installed VirtualBox 2.2, and still I have no sound. I used to have sound, but it stopped working yesterday. I was using 2.1 for a few weeks or more.

Any ideas on how to fix this? It seems rather annoying, and I suspect something in Ubuntu might be conflicting with the sound perhaps?

In general we suggest to use the PulseAudio backend of VirtualBox. On Ubuntu it might be necessary to make the start pulseaudio daemon start automatically during boot.
