Issue with PXE Netboot and Intel Pro / 1000MT

Post by samjones »

Hi all, I'm new to Virtual Box so I've been doing my best to do my due diligence before posting this here. I'm having an issue with PXE netbooting in VirtualBox 2.2.0 running under Ubuntu 8.10 server. The issue is as follows:

If I select the virtual machine's guest nic to be the AMD PCNet FAST III then the subsequent netbooting PXE DHCP request works fine (TFTP request completes and the VM gets the image) but the Win PE enviornment I'm using cannot work with the guest nic driver and I can't build the image from my local network.

If I select the guest nic to be then Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop then the PXE DHCP request fails (timeout). However, when using this driver for the guest and manually mounting the ISO that gets sent down through TFTP, the Win PE environment works fine and then can build the image from my local network.

Any ideas why the PXE DHCP request would fail only when using the Intel PRO/1000 MT as the virtual networking hardware or any ideas how I might go about troubleshooting this? Right now I am just manually mounting the .ISO that is normally sent down through TFTP.

Thanks for you time.

This is a driver issue, you will have to build a new boot image with (newer) Pro drivers.
