[archlinux on ubuntu]problem with vboxvideo driver
Hi,
I'm virtualizing Archlinux on ubuntu 8.10 intrepid ibex.
This morning, I've made a global upgrading of the Archlinux system, which installed a new version of xorg-server.
Since upgrading, xorg doesn't start when starting the computer, due to an incompatibility between the new xorg-server and vboxvideo driver
I've made a screenshot, so that you can see the error message

My question is: How can I update the vboxvideo driver in the goal that xorg-server of Archlinux starts normally ?
Thank you for your help

Try first to reinstall the Guest Additions.

Re: [archlinux on ubuntu]problem with vboxvideo driver
I've tried it by adding VBoxGuestAdditions.iso as an optic disc, but in the directoy /media, no sign of this .iso image...
So, how can I reinstall them? Or how to solve my problem? ^^

Read the Manual howto install the guest additions. or look into the linux guest area in the howto for that.

Re: [archlinux on ubuntu]problem with vboxvideo driver
I've already managed to install the guest additions.
And they are already installed
But the .iso file supposed to contain the script for installation of them simply does not appear in the /media directory as it's supposed to be(or I'm making a mistake

Re: [archlinux on ubuntu]problem with vboxvideo driver
I tried to mount the .iso file by writing the following commands
But the prompt answers me :
Code: Select all
mkdir /mnt/iso
mount -t iso9660 VBoxGuestAdditions.iso /mnt/iso/ -o loop
VBoxGuestAdditions.iso : No such file or directory
Re: [archlinux on ubuntu]problem with vboxvideo driver
You need to mount that ISO as a cdrom image ON the Host for the Guest VM.

Re: [archlinux on ubuntu]problem with vboxvideo driver
So, you mean that I'm supposed to mount the .iso file on my ubuntu?
Then, running it on archlinux?
I'm sorry but I do not understand very well what you advice me ^^
I'm french speaker, and in french, "host" could design Ubuntu OR archlinux, in this case

Re: [archlinux on ubuntu]problem with vboxvideo driver
An ISO is an image of a real CD, which you can mount as if it is a real CD, look at the CDROM options for your Guest VM.
A free babblefish translation:
"Une ISO est une image d'un vrai CD, que vous pouvez monter comme si c'est un vrai CD, regard aux options de disque compact-ROM pour votre VM d'invité."
I surely hope this is french

Re: [archlinux on ubuntu]problem with vboxvideo driver
Be relieved, I already knew what an image .iso is ^^
But my remaining problem is that when I have mounted the iso.file(by doing the following procedure : "In the “Devices” menu in the virtual machine’s menu bar, VirtualBox has a handy menu
item named “Install guest additions”, which will automatically bring up the Additions
in your VM window.")
I suppose that the .iso file is correctly mounted now, but when I want to launch the installation script of additions guest(I did it graphically by the past, but the video drivers aren't up to date...which is surprising, because of a virtualbox update to version 2.2 the day before), I simply do not find it, it does not appear in the /media directory as it is supposed to be.
Of course, it's harder without a graphical interface, maybe am I supposed to mount manually the .iso file, if it's the case, I tried to yesterday, and it failed as well

Re: [archlinux on ubuntu]problem with vboxvideo driver
Ok, you don't mount the iso file, you mount the cdrom device which should appear on the desktop if the Guest detects there is something in it, at least thats how it works with ubuntu.

Re: [archlinux on ubuntu]problem with vboxvideo driver
Yes, that's how it works
When I first installed the additions guest on Archlinux(I had a graphical interface, at this time)it worked the same way, exactly the same way.
Now, my graphical interface is accessible no more cause of the upgrade or X.org, so, I tried the same procedure, hoping that the .iso file would appear in the /media directory, but at the first view, it is not, so my question is: what can I do?
I'm going to try to mount it manually, but I failed yesterday, I'm not sure I will manage to do this today, but I'm gonna try
