VBox 2.2.0: VirtualBox COM server is not running ...

Dear List:

I just upgraded to version 2.2.0 from 2.1.4. Some VMs run just fine, but others give me the error message shown below. These VMs run OK under version 2.1.4. Did anyone encounter a problem like this? Is my XML file likely corrupted? The only issue I can think of is that I have many snapshots because I could not erase them in 2.1.4 --- this is why I am upgrading to 2.2.0, hoping that this was fixed.

I will experiment with the XML files and post additional details here. Just in case that you had any advice, please let me know.

Most likely, the VirtualBox COM server is not running or failed to start.

I have seen this when trying to upgrade when you had a guest in a saved state during the upgrade. Also when there were snapshots. Can you tell me if this might have been the case for you? Also did you just install over the previous version of VB or did you un-install it first and then install the new version?

1) Yes, I did trace the problem to a VM that has MANY snapshots that were taken while the VM was running. Therefore AFAIK the state was saved each time as well.

2) I did remove the old vbox and all required packages that were not needed by other software. Then I installed the new version. This should be as clean install as reasonably possible.

OK, I gave up and am downgrading back to version 2.1.4. I will then duplicate the disks inside the the guests since I just cannot recover from 69 snapshots by hand.

This actually may be a show-stopper for me since I cannot afford failing when upgrading. I need a reliable virtualization solution...

It appears that removing snapshots may be critical for upgrading from 2.1.4 to 2.2.0. But discarding snapshots is something that fails for me. I may have tracked down the issue to some timing problem and filed a bug report. See

I will post more if I figure how to discard my snapshots and if that helps with the upgrade.
