Slow audio with AsteriskNow guest on Linux host

Hi,
after testing an AsteriskNow VOIP PBX as a guest on an OSX host using VirtualBox 2.1 and having no problems I then tried to install and use AsteriskNow as a guest on a Debian Lenny host on AMD64 hardware and found that the voice-prompts played back from Asterisk had very slow and choppy audio.
I *think* this is a VirtualBox issue rather than an AsteriskNow issue as it worked fine as a guest on OSX.
I've also noticed that time runs slow in the guest when on a Linux host but runs at normal speed when on an OSX host.
I've tried with and without USB and audio support in the guest's configuration but no change.
I've tried VirtualBox 2.1 and 2.2 on the Linux host but no change to the slow and choppy audio.
Any ideas please?
